Washington Federals Coaches

Ray Jauch, Head Coach (1983 [18 games]- 1984 [1 game])

Ray Jauch (pronounced "yock"), before joining the Federals, was a highly successful Canadian Football League coach, notably with Edmonton and Winnipeg.  He was also a very nice man who deserved much better than what he got in Washington with the Federals.  He coached the Federals through their entire 1983 inaugural campaign, winning just 4 of 18 games.  He was back for 1984, but after one game (a blowout loss to expansion Jacksonville), Federals owner Berl Bernhard made the infamous "untrained gerbils" comparison and canned Jauch in favor of offensive coordinator Dick Bielski.

Dick Bielski, Head Coach (1984 [17 games])

Dick Bielski was elevated to the head coaching position of the Washington Federals after their first game of the 1984 season. He was unable to better the record of his predecessor, winning just three of his seventeen games at the Federals helm.  During the Fifties and Sixties, Bielski had been a star back and end at the University of Maryland, and had a successful NFL career with the Eagles and Cowboys.
