Washington Federals Management Staff
Berl Bernhard - Team Owner/CEO
Berl Bernhard was a successful lawyer in Washington, D.C. as well as the owner
of a championship racing yacht, the Invictus. The Federals'
green and black were also Invictus' racing colors. As a
professional football owner, he is best remembered for ripping his team as
"Muppets" and "untrained gerbils." Mr. Bernhard was a hands-off
owner at first and assumed more responsibility after James Gould resigned
partway through the 1983 season. After the 1984 season, he sold the team
twice -- first to a Miami investor, and after that deal fell through, to an
Orlando businessman, Donald Dizney. The team relocated for the USFL's
final 1985 season. After the team left town, Mr. Bernhard returned to his
law practice and was rarely if ever heard to comment publicly on the Feds.
James Gould - President (1983)
James Gould was one of the founders of the USFL and was hired as the first (and
only) President of the Washington Federals. He resigned partway through
the 1983 season when the Federals ran into trouble at the gate and on the
field.
Dick Myers - General Manager (1983-84)
Formerly assistant general manager of the Washington Redskins, Dick Myers was
named General Manager of the Washington Federals at their founding and served
in that capacity until the team was sold after the 1984 season.
Terry Metcalf - Director of Player Personnel (1983-84)
Former Redskins running back Terry Metcalf played a role in the management of
the Federals. He wore a number of different hats over their two
seasons. Although he never played a down for the team he was sometimes
seen in commercials and public service announcements wearing a team jersey.
